15th Canberra Brigade
The Tuggeranong 15th Canberra Girls' Brigade is sponsored by the Tuggeranong congregation. The group meets every Tuesday for a variety of activities aimed at helping girls to develop spiritually, socially, intellectually and physically, and to grow to be mature and responsible citizens. Girls from age 5 are welcome to come along and join in the activities of a warm and friendly group of girls.
Questions people ask about Girls' Brigade
What is Girls' Brigade?
The Girls' Brigade is a world wide Christian organisation of girls and women which was established in Ireland over 100 years ago. It has since spread to more than 50 countries and is still growing. Companies meet each week and girls regularly take part in crafts, games, camps and outings, but also are challenged through discovering more about God, serving in the community and learning leadership and living skills. Girls Brigaders form friendships with other girls, not only from within company, but sometimes even from other parts of the world! At all times, girls are in the care of trained and competent leaders in a safe environment. What does GB give girls?
The caring Christian environment encourages the development of each girl's individual talents, while equipping them with social, physical, intellectual and spiritual skills needed in life to become vital members of the community.
How old are girls that participate in GB?
GB provides programs for girls aged from 5 to 18. Girls in school years K-2 are cadets, years 3-6 are juniors (sometimes divided into two groups), years 7-8 are seniors and years 9-12 are pioneers.
Why do you wear a uniform?
A uniform makes show that we belong to a world-wide organisation and are proud to belong to that organisation. It also encourages us to look neat and presentable.
Why only girls?
Sometimes it's good to be just with other girls. Some girls feel more comfortable and relate better in a girls-only environment. Boys may not like some of the activities we do. For boys, there is Boys' Brigade, which has the same ideals and a similar program to GB. Most churches with a GB company also have a BB company.
Do you have a motto or an aim?
Yes, we have both. Our motto is "to seek, serve and follow Christ", while our aim is "to help girls to become followers of the Lord Jesus Christ, and through self-control, reverence and a sense of responsibility to find true enrichment of life."
Do you earn awards?
All activities done at GB help girls earn awards that are presented at the end of each year. Older girls can choose to spend time outside GB participating in special awards. Visit the Pioneers' Section for more information. |
