A prayer for the Uniting Church

Written by President of the UCA Assembly, Dr Deidre Palmer, six months after the Fifteenth Assembly

Gracious and loving God,

We thank you for the Uniting Church in Australia,

for the ways your Spirit empowers us

to participate in your liberating mission in the world.

You call us to be your Pilgrim People,

responsive to your leading,

as we witness to your reconciling love in our communities.

Faith and spirituality

12 February

In the readings this week, Paul writes about how he fed the Corinthians with spiritual milk as they were spiritual “infants in Christ,” not ready for “solid food.” Perhaps we are not much different in the Church today. We tend to see things too simply. Like the fledgling nation of Israel, we often see things as either/or. Life and faith are presented as life and prosperity versus death and adversity, blessings versus curses.

From Disconnection to Connection

If my instincts are right, this rediscovery of Trinity can’t come a moment too soon. I’m convinced that beneath the ugly manifestations of our present evils—political corruption, ecological devastation, warring against one another everywhere, hating each other based on race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation—the greatest dis-ease facing humanity right now is our profound and painful sense of disconnection. We feel disconnected from God, certainly, but also from ourselves (our bodies), from each other, and from our world. Our sense of this fourfold isolation is plunging our species into increasingly destructive behavior and much mental illness.

Yet many are discovering that the gift of the Trinity—and our practical, felt experience of this gift—offers a grounded reconnection with God, with self, with others, and with our world that all religion and spirituality, and arguably, even politics, are aiming for, but which conventional religion, spirituality, and politics fail to access.

About Our Church

Our faith community began in 1975 as a small ecumenical gathering of people who settled in the new Canberra township of Tuggeranong. We have grown with the Tuggeranong Community, and our parish centre is the hub for our work, as a place of worship, of gathering, fellowship and ministry.

We come together for authentic and Christ-centred worship. While we worship in a variety of styles, we share a common focus on faithfully listening for God’s Word and sharing His kindness and compassion with others. We express our love for God and others through a range of ministries, and connections with our community.
