Easter Day

What’s in an Ending?
Mark 16: 1-8

What’s in an ending? Nothing less than success or failure. A good story needs a good a good ending don’t you think? To my mind there are few things worse than a story which has an unsatisfactory ending. Movie makers excel at changing endings because they feel people want to go away feeling good. Perhaps they fear that a thought provoking ending won’t be a hit.

Palm Sunday

Written by

Sara Miles tells a story: A couple of weeks before Easter, I was at the farmers market in our neighbourhood and I ran into some friends, radiantly happy, who were carrying their new baby. We stopped to talk, and the baby’s dad, who isn’t a Christian but has always taken a kindly interest in my church work, said, “I know you must be busy getting ready for Easter, right? Isn’t it soon? So what’s the thing to say — do you tell people “Happy Holy Week?’”

“Well,” I said. “You could say 'Happy Easter,’ when it’s actually Easter day, or ‘Christ is Risen!’ if you’re hardcore, I guess. But until then it’s kind of confusing: there’s a lot of different stuff going on in Holy Week. You could get whiplash.”

This morning we are given a feast of texts to reflect on. Besides Psalm 130 and a passage from chapter 8 of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, we have Ezekiel’s dry bones and the raising of Lazarus. Both the Hebrew Bible story and the gospel narrative are full of symbolism and both speak to us today. I am going to reflect on the story from the gospel. It is very long and we haven’t heard it read for that reason. So my reflection will be a retelling of the story as found in the 11th chapter of John’s gospel.

About Our Church

Our faith community began in 1975 as a small ecumenical gathering of people who settled in the new Canberra township of Tuggeranong. We have grown with the Tuggeranong Community, and our parish centre is the hub for our work, as a place of worship, of gathering, fellowship and ministry.

We come together for authentic and Christ-centred worship. While we worship in a variety of styles, we share a common focus on faithfully listening for God’s Word and sharing His kindness and compassion with others. We express our love for God and others through a range of ministries, and connections with our community.
