Sermons and Reflections

Romans 15:26 to 16:16.

In our very recent celebration of Advent and Christmas, we’ve been hearing and thinking about people who are widely recognised as saints: — St Mary and St Joseph, the birth parents of Jesus, and also the Three Wise Men or Magi: St Melchior, St Caspar & St Balthazar.

As we read further into the New Testament we encounter many, many more — e.g. except for Judas, all the disciples of Jesus, e.g. Peter, James, John, Matthew, Philip, Bartholomew, Jude and also some of the women who followed Jesus, e.g. Mary Magdalene, Martha and her sister Mary of Bethany and their brother Lazarus; and later the missionaries Paul, Barnabas, Silas and Timothy plus the two Gospel writers who weren’t disciples, namely Mark and Luke.

Wonder and Longing

Written by

Christmas 2018

Christmas for me this year is a little odd. A little less than a month ago, John and I were living in a house in chaos, full of packed and half packed boxes, with all the fear and terror of anticipating a move across the continent. There was also the necessity of us both saying good bye to family and friends on the West coast, knowing it would be quite some time before we saw them again, followed by the task of unpacking and sorting and settling into a new place.

Advent 4

This week we have heard the words of the Magnificat of Mary. In many ways these words draw together and sum up much of what we have heard during the Advent period.

Our theme for Advent has been the phrase “the thing we fear the most may save us”, and using a bear as the symbol of these fears. This has included the bear representing the fear of end times, and the fear of bears that symbolize the other, the person we perceive as hostile, such as asylum seekers and refugees. We also talked about the bear in the neighborhood, and what we fear there. Today we will explore the idea of the bear within, the fear that can come from within us and cripple us with both its potency and impact.

About Our Church

Our faith community began in 1975 as a small ecumenical gathering of people who settled in the new Canberra township of Tuggeranong. We have grown with the Tuggeranong Community, and our parish centre is the hub for our work, as a place of worship, of gathering, fellowship and ministry.

We come together for authentic and Christ-centred worship. While we worship in a variety of styles, we share a common focus on faithfully listening for God’s Word and sharing His kindness and compassion with others. We express our love for God and others through a range of ministries, and connections with our community.
