Sermons and Reflections

Structural and personal freedom

Francis and Clare of Assisi were not so much prophets by what they said as in the radical, system-critiquing way that they lived their lives. They found both their inner and outer freedom by structurally living on the edge of the inside of church and society. Too often people seek either inner freedom or mere outer freedom, but seldom—in my opinion—do people seek and find both. Francis and Clare did.

Social Justice Sunday

Written by

Sunday 25 September

Somebody remarked to me this week that they had seen the first signs of Spring. And the first sign of Spring these days is apparently Christmas decoration at the Hyperdome! So we get plenty of advance notice of Christmas, don’t we?

Not so much advance notice for the day that is recognised in many churches throughout Australia on this day. Today is Social Justice Sunday.

It is helpful to get the exact definition of social justice so I brought my copy of the Macquarie Dictionary.

Luke 16: 1-13

When I first read the text for this morning my reaction was Oh no, not this again. This story in Luke is probably the most controversial of the parables or stories Jesus told because it seems to be so wrong. No matter how you look at it, the main character appears unjust, sleazy – it seems that all he can think of is getting out of a sticky situation without getting caught whilst at the same time, feathering his nest for his future security. I know many of you have wrestled with too.  So… instead of Oh no, not this again let’s be a bit more positive and have another look at it. You may not agree with what I say but then very few find agreement on it.

At this point, let me say that I am very grateful for the internet resources available in preparing for this children’s talk/sermon and give full credit to Sarah Dylan Breuer for most of what follows.

About Our Church

Our faith community began in 1975 as a small ecumenical gathering of people who settled in the new Canberra township of Tuggeranong. We have grown with the Tuggeranong Community, and our parish centre is the hub for our work, as a place of worship, of gathering, fellowship and ministry.

We come together for authentic and Christ-centred worship. While we worship in a variety of styles, we share a common focus on faithfully listening for God’s Word and sharing His kindness and compassion with others. We express our love for God and others through a range of ministries, and connections with our community.
