Worthy of the bread

Written by

John 6:24-35

The readings from Ephesians 4:1-16 tell us about living a worthy life, being God’s body, his Church in Unity, and John 6:24-35 tells us that Jesus is the Bread of Life.
Earlier writing in Ephesians (1:4) had already stated that God chose us not only before we did anything to deserve or even desire it, but before the creation of the world.
Ephesians 4:1 is a major hinge in the letters of Paul. It turns from describing all that God has done for the cosmos, the church, and Paul himself to consider the kind of life that is a fitting response to life being God’s gift to us.

Justified by faith

Written by

Romans 4:24(b) to Romans 5:21

‘Justify’ and ‘justification’ are words we use when we wish to indicate an entitlement to something or an excuse for some action. For example, “When I’m on a crowded bus I feel justified in hanging on to my seat because I’m a decrepit old age pensioner. Let the younger people stand because they’re fitter and stronger than me.” Or, perhaps irately, “You have no justification for leaving your car in that disabled parking space because you haven’t displayed your permit!” Or, in wonderment, “How can you justify smoking four packs of cigarettes a day?”

"Such is life"

Written by

 Mark 6:14-29

“Such is life” Ned Kelly is reported to have said as the hangman placed the noose around his neck. Ned has a mythological status in Australian culture. He is our most famous outlaw of the pioneering days in Victoria. He now features in art,  literature and  films. Whether Ned Kelly was a depraved criminal, as some hold, or a persecuted freedom-fighter, as others believe, there is no doubting his iconic status. And those last words of his stand as an apt summary of the tragedy of many lives: “Such is life”

Things can go badly wrong. Even the most blameless person can unfairly suffer. Those words of Ned Kelly could also be applied to that remarkable prophet whom we know as John the Baptiser, a cousin of Jesus. Today’s selection from Mark’s Gospel gives us a summary of his death.

About Our Church

Our faith community began in 1975 as a small ecumenical gathering of people who settled in the new Canberra township of Tuggeranong. We have grown with the Tuggeranong Community, and our parish centre is the hub for our work, as a place of worship, of gathering, fellowship and ministry.

We come together for authentic and Christ-centred worship. While we worship in a variety of styles, we share a common focus on faithfully listening for God’s Word and sharing His kindness and compassion with others. We express our love for God and others through a range of ministries, and connections with our community.
